One of the questions we’re regularly asked when carrying out workplace PAT testing is:
“Do you need to switch my computer off?”
For a full electrical test, equipment will usually need to be safely disconnected from the power supply. We understand, however, that switching off computers in the middle of a working day can be disruptive.
That’s why our technicians always work with you to keep interruptions to a minimum.
We Won’t Just Switch Off Your Computer!
Imagine working on an important document only for your computer to suddenly go black.
Nobody wants that.
Before switching off or disconnecting a computer or another piece of electrical equipment, our PAT testing technicians will check that it’s okay to do so. This gives you an opportunity to save your work, close any programs and shut the computer down correctly.
In most cases, the disruption is minimal and the testing itself only takes a few minutes.
Once the necessary checks have been completed, the equipment can be plugged back in and you’re ready to get on with your working day.
Why Does the Computer Need to Be Switched Off?
PAT testing isn’t simply a case of looking at an appliance and putting a sticker on it.
Depending on the equipment and the tests required, our technician may need to disconnect it from the mains supply so that appropriate electrical safety tests can be carried out.
A visual inspection is also an important part of the process.
Our technicians look for signs of damage or deterioration, including the condition of the plug, flexible cable and appliance itself, helping to identify potential electrical safety issues.
What If You Can’t Switch Computers Off During the Day?
For some businesses, even a few minutes of downtime can be difficult.
Perhaps employees are continuously using their computers, you’re operating a busy customer service environment or certain equipment needs to remain available throughout your normal opening hours.
That’s something we can work around.
TECC Ltd. can offer out-of-hours PAT testing, allowing the work to be completed when fewer employees are using the equipment.
Depending on your requirements, this could include appointments outside your normal working hours, helping to minimise disruption to your business.
Help Us Make Your PAT Testing Run Smoothly
If your workplace has a large number of computers, servers or other equipment that can’t easily be switched off, it’s worth telling our administration team when you book your appointment.
We can then discuss the best approach before our technician arrives.
You can also help on the day by asking employees to save their work when our technician reaches their area and ensuring plugs and cables are reasonably accessible.
A little preparation can make the whole process quicker and easier for everyone.
PAT Testing With Minimal Disruption
We know your employees have jobs to do, which is why our aim is always to carry out PAT testing as efficiently as possible while maintaining the appropriate standard of inspection and testing.
We’ll ask before equipment is switched off, give employees an opportunity to save their work and work with your business to minimise disruption wherever possible.
And if testing during the working day isn’t practical, talk to us about arranging an alternative time.
